The weekend of the 17th I went with other international students to the Dingle Peninsula to go to a Gealtacht to speak Irish and to be cultural tourists. This trip helped me to understand the complexities of the language and culture and to appreciate this year even more!
I am not going to write much in this post, the pictures will do most of the talking!
The sunset as we were arriving Friday night! |
That night we went to the pub, a very friendly cat kept us company! |
I know it's very hard to see, but for some reason there was a Green Bay Packers poster behind the bar... |
The view from my window, the cows woke me up each morning... |
...setting out for our day trip around, eventually to stop in Dingle! |
we were told this was the closest point to America from Ireland... |
This is the 'Sleeping Giant', can you see why? |
Oh look! holy well!
Don't know who she is, but she's pretty!
One of my favorite photos from the trip! |
going into the building used as a school in the movie "Ryan's Daughter" |
looking out from inside... |
For my dear American friends back home... 'Craic' means 'fun'. it is pronounced 'crack'...tee hee
likes the ogham over the windows
The church rang bells, it was pretty
I saw this and thought of you Autumn! |
the Dingle harbor |
I am pretty sure this is where they make Dingle Gold--but they didn't look open--I was gonna buy a bottle, but maybe next time |
Someone mentioned Johny Walker...and then I saw this. I know the name is different, but it was a funny coincidence.
looking through a hole on top of an ogham stone... |
apparently there is some legend here, if you go through this window-thing you get out of purgatory and go straight to heaven--it's like a 'get out of hell free' card! lol
America: mom; UK: mum; Ireland: mam |
The Gallarus Oratory...
me looking through the window of the Oratory
And then back to the hostel...
these adorable guys came over to say hello when we were walking towards the monastic settlement...
the road reflectors look like an Irish flag... tee hee
At this point I split off to go hiking with my new friend Matthias!
found an abandoned church, but the graveyard must still be used 'cause it had a parking lot and everything...
At this point the cows were acting creepy, they would always look up and stare at us all at once! and they would walk over as far as they could towards us...so we left before they figured out how to get around the fence.
Dog #1 to follow us down the road for a bit...
This fella would kind of nudge his friend over to the fence, whose video I posted earlier--he licked me! look at post titled "Holy Cow!" :)
We started climbing the hill/mountain overlooking the town...
And it was worth it!
Dog #2: he came up and gave us an enthusiastic greeting before trotting back towards home! such a sweetie-pie!
I helped in making dinner Saturday night
I helped in making dinner Saturday night
After singing our respective national anthems and learning the Ireland anthem we were learning some Irish dancing and then waltzing...it was a blast!
The pub we stopped at Saturday night...
Making my way down to the beach...
It says 'Gaelige', though I didn't write it.
Just as we were leaving the beach to go back to the bus a lady stopped and talked to us. We talked about the weather and how we were international students from Cork. she was impressed with how much we learned in such a short time! :)
The End!
